Program Description:
Honors Learning Through Service in Nicaragua
The service leaning experience in Nicaragua consists of a semester of independent study centered on a seven-day trip to Managua, Nicaragua. While in Central America, students will visit historical, political, and cultural sites, but the primary purpose of the experience consists of immersion in a school situated in a low-income satellite neighborhood. The school serves children of Managua's dump dwellers and UT students will be expected to work in the classroom and complete a construction project on-site.

Student will have first hand interaction with children of the dump-dwellers while serving in a local school. They will visit historical and cultural sites and will actively participate in exercises designed to raise awareness of the issues involved with poverty. Students will be responsible for an on-site building project. Additional opportunities for research are available with instructor consent.
