Why Study In Chengdu?
The Chengdu program is ideal for students who are interested in experiencing life in one of the most ancient, culturally fascinating and authentic places in all of China. Chengdu is also one of the most important economic centers and transportation and communication hubs in the country. The program offers the opportunity to learn Mandarin Chinese, a language which is becoming increasingly popular in the global marketplace.
This program offers a high quality educational experience with a focus on either Chinese Language or Chinese Studies. If you choose to focus on intensive language study, you may also take an elective course such as Tai Chi, Chinese culture, history or Chinese cuisine. The intensive language approach allows you to complete up to one year of Chinese language coursework in both summer sessions combined. Students who would rather focus on Chinese studies may select from several courses taught in English. Students choosing this second option can take the Introductory Chinese Language course and may take additional elective courses in Chinese history, literature, government and politics, culture and society.
The academic courses are only part of the value of a summer program. Participation in formal and informal activities, such as field trips to sites of historical and cultural interest, museums, weekend trips to the mountains and other cultural immersion activities form an integral part of the program.
China and Chengdu
Chengdu, also known as "the city in heaven," is the capital of Sichuan Province; the economic, cultural and political center of Southwest China. Its famous food and tea culture make Chengdu very attractive to travelers from around the world.
The train ride from Chengdu south to Kunming in the Yunnan Province is considered one of the most scenic in all of China. To the north lies Jiuzaigou, a national park with beautiful lakes, rivers and waterfalls. To the west lies the Land of Great Corrugations, wild mountainous terrain that eventually becomes the massive Tibetan-Qinghai plateau. Sichuan is endowed with some of the most dramatic natural scenery to be found in China.
Chengdu is a great place to live and people are friendly and welcoming. It is a city where past meets present. High rises and fashionable shops give the city a modern feel, while the street markets and traditional teahouses add a taste from the past.
